The band came in February 2019 and tracked 2 songs in one day, and came back to do some overdubs and mixing with Adam. Some things you may spot in the video – a pair of Coles ribbon mics for drum overheads, a vintage ‘cream’ 421 on vocals.

The band have fantastic sounding instruments and were well rehearsed. I set them up to track the songs live, as the band had a great feel so a lot of the tracks laid down with the drums were kept, with us going back to overdub some elements such as 12 string acoustic guitar, and some vocal layers.

Having captured some vibey great sounding tracks made the mix process fun and pretty quick – the band came back to the studio to do a full analogue mix on the API board at One Flight Up with me, and we knocked two songs out in the day.

Here is an acoustic track I did recently that has some great live in the studio footage. Beating Hearts Club performed this live and we mixed it that afternoon at One Flight Up Recording Studios.

The band had recently completed a full album and wanted to revisit this song which was the 1st single from said album. While the band is a fully fledged outfit with drummer, they decided to strip this version back to bare melodic elements while performing all parts live. We kept the signal chains fairly simple, and experimented with some of the in-house amps (you can see some in the video) to shape the guitar and piano tones, while creating a ‘jam vibe’ for the boys.

One noteworthy factoid of the session: this was all mixed to analogue tape in Studio One at OFU. We did a lot of A/B checking and found the tape really helped the presence and depth of the mix.

I have been working with this band for the last 18 months and watched them go from strength to strength. This song is a high point for the band and my own personal production goals. Very exciting to be part of the process and working on such great rock music.
